Can Digital Legacy Vault read my stored data?+
No — and this is by design. Your encryption key is derived from your master password entirely in your browser using PBKDF2 (600,000 iterations). Your key never leaves your device. We store only AES-256-GCM ciphertext. Even if our servers were compromised, your data would be unreadable.
What happens if I forget my master password?+
Since we never store your key, we cannot recover it for you. We strongly recommend storing your master password in a secure offline location. During setup, you can also create an encrypted recovery kit — a special backup designed for heir access rather than your own.
How does the Dead Man's Switch actually work?+
You set a check-in interval (e.g., every 90 days). Before the deadline, we send warning emails and SMS messages. If you still don't respond within the grace period, we notify your trusted contacts who must then independently verify your death (e.g., 3 out of 5 confirmations). Only after threshold is met — plus the time-lock period — does the inheritance protocol execute.
Are the smart contracts audited?+
Yes. All production smart contracts undergo third-party security audits before mainnet deployment. Audit reports are published publicly on our website. We use Sec3 for Solana programs and Certik for Ethereum contracts. Smart contract source code is also fully open-source.
What if Digital Legacy Vault shuts down?+
Smart contracts deployed to Solana or Ethereum are permanent and do not depend on our servers. Even if we disappear, the contracts execute autonomously. For vault data, we provide an export feature that creates an encrypted offline backup — a sealed PDF or encrypted file — that heirs can access independently using open-source decryption tools.
Is this legally valid as part of an estate plan?+
Digital Legacy Vault is a technology platform that facilitates asset transfer — it is not a legal service. Smart contract transfers may not automatically satisfy your jurisdiction's inheritance laws. We strongly recommend working with an estate attorney to integrate this into a complete digital estate plan. We offer referrals to attorneys who specialize in digital assets.
